At Dakar, the delegates reiterated thier commitment to six EFA goals: early childhood care and education, providing free and compulsory primary education for all, promoting learning skills for the young and adults, increasing adult literacy by 50 percent, achieving gender parity and improving the quality of education.

They also agreed on a deadline to achieve all six goals by 2015.

Better education would not only improve standards of living, but could also save lives. “If you are a mother, you can treat your child better if you can read and write,” Leotes said.

Studies show that educated girls and women make better health-related decisions, including on antenatal care. Each additional year of a mother’s schooling reduces infant mortality rates by 5 percent to 10 percent. Children with educated mothers may be better immunized and get better nutrition.

Unfortunately, Leotes said, with four years to go to 2015, the world was still not on track in achieving its EFA goals.

“About 67 million children are still out of school, while dropout rates are still a major problem,” she said, adding that many schoolchildren were learning far too little
